同窓会の皆様、5期(1961卒)の川島重成です。

ICU に1969年に神田盾夫教授の後任として着任、2000年に退任（名誉教授）、その後佐野好則教授を補佐しつつ、2008年まで非常勤講師として、一般教育科目「西洋古典の世界」の一部を担当、ギリシャ悲劇『オイデイプス王』をご紹介し続けました。 今回の2026年ホームカミング講演では、ICUでのかつての授業のことなどを振り返りながら、「古代ギリシャに学びつつ、ICUを思う 」という趣旨で、お話しさせていただきます。 

ギリシャはLiberal Arts の原点です。そのギリシャもやがてキリスト教を受容し、現代にいたっています。そこにICUの理念と関わる何かがあるようです。久しぶりに皆様にお会いできることを楽しみにしています。　 

 To my Fellow Alumni,
My name is Shigenari Kawashima, Class of 1961 (5th class).
I joined ICU in 1969 as a successor to Professor Tateo Kanda and served until my retirement in 2000 (Professor Emeritus). Subsequently, while assisting Professor Yoshinori Sano, I continued to teach as a part-time lecturer until 2008.  

During those years, I was in charge of a part of the General Education course “The World of Classics,” and introduced the Greek tragedy ‘Oedipus Rex’ continuously.
For the 2026 Homecoming Lecture, I will reflect on my past classes and speak on the theme “Reflecting on ICU while Learning from Ancient Greece.”  

Greece is the origin of Liberal Arts. It has eventually embraced Christianity and continued into the modern era. I believe that there is a profound connection to the philosophy of ICU. 

 I look forward to seeing you all again after so long.

失われた30年でもなかなか変われない日本。その原因がもしかするとメディアにあるかもしれないと考えたことはありますか？日本のメディア状況が世界の中でどれだけ特異なものなのか？日本が現在の閉塞から抜け出すための処方箋をメディアの視点から考えます。

AIを組み込んでヒューマノイドが現実のものになりつつある現代社会において、「人間とは何か」という問いはこれまでになく切実な問いになりつつあります。すでに記憶をスマートフォンに任せてしまっている人も多いでしょう。考えることをやめ、生成AIに依存して生活している学生も出てきています。そんな中で、考える力を身につけるリベラルアーツ教育の真価が問われています。人間の価値は何か、人にしかできないことは何か。人として手放してはいけないことは何か。ICUの一般教育科目GEL002リベラルアーツ特別講義「リベラルアーツから問うポストヒューマン」の授業では、人文科学、社会科学、自然科学の教員たちがそれぞれの見地からポストヒューマンを論じますが、今回はその一部をご紹介したいと思います。皆さんは、ICUのリベラルアーツ教育の成果を生かして暮らしていらっしゃるでしょうか。振り返りのヒントになるかもしれません。

In a world where AI and human-like robots are becoming a reality, the question “What is a human?” is more important than ever. Many of us already rely on smartphones to store our memories. Some students have even stopped thinking for themselves, depending entirely on generative AI.
This is why the true value of a Liberal Arts education—which teaches us how to think—is being tested. What makes a human valuable? What can only people do? What are the things we should never give up as human beings?
In ICU’s general education course, GEL002 “Debating Posthuman from Liberal Arts Perspectives,” professors from various fields—humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences—discuss these topics from their own points of view. Today, we want to share some of those ideas with you. We hope this will give you a chance to stop and reflect on how you are using what you learned from the Liberal Arts education ICU provided.
